PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

It is now Law in the Republic of Ireland that everyone that works on automotive air-conditioning systems MUST have a refrigerant handling license. Green Auto Service applauds the work and efforts of such bodies such as EPA (environmental protection agency) that help to ensure best environmental practice are adhered to.

Refrigerant gas is extremely damaging to the ozone layer and contributes greatly to global warming; any gas that is irresponsibly released into the atmosphere by repair shops, backstreet mechanics and the like is deemed a criminal offense.

Brakes

The brakes are probably the most important component of your car. When you press the brake pedal, brake fluid is forced down to the brake calipers in each wheel, causing the brake pads to “squeeze” against the brake discs. This friction ensures that you and your passengers can stop safely in case of an emergency, or just in everyday driving conditions.

How do I know if I might need to replace my brakes?

• Car pulls to one side
• Unusual scrapping noise
• Rear wheel locks and skids
• Brake pedal becomes “spongy”
• Brake pedal is too hard
• Car takes too long to stop
• Low brake fluid level
• Brake warning light illuminating on dashboard
• Hand brake has reduced effectiveness and becomes difficult to hold on hills.

Brake Fluid

Keeping your vehicles braking system in optimal condition is crucial for your safety and that of others. Brake fluid is a vital part of the brake system and ABS units.

Unfortunately brake fluid is one of the most neglected items in the car as it can only be under extreme conditions when you need it most that you notice any problems.

What does brake fluid do?

• Transmits the force on the brake pedal into pressure to all parts of the braking system which will apply the brakes.
• Brake fluid is designed to have a high boiling point to withstand a high temperature generated by the friction of braking.
• Brake fluid prevents the system from freezing during icy conditions and extreme cold.

WATER: THE DEADLY KILLER!

• Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water. As it absorbs moisture over time, the boiling point gradually lowers – this reduces the effectiveness of the brake fluid.
• Once the water content rises above 3%, the performance of the braking system becomes compromised.
• Water reduces the boiling point of the fluid, air bubbles are created and braking can become ineffective
• You will only be aware of the problem after heavy braking sometimes when it is too late!!
• Brake fluid contamination is now such a major concern that all manufacturers recommend that it is changed at least every two years and between 30,000kms intervals.
• Water in the brake fluid will cause premature wear of the wheel cylinders and brake callipers. Failure to change your brake fluid regularly can result in costly repairs.

BRAKE FLUID DETERIORATES OVER TIME AND MUST BE CHANGED REGULARILY TO ENSURE SAFE EFFECTIVE BRAKING. UNFORTUNATELY IT IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERLOOKED VEHICLE FLUIDS.

CHECKING YOUR BRAKE FLUID

• Check the fluid level in the reservoir
• If it is below the MIN level (or if the brake warning light is on), brake fluid should be added up to the MAX level. Please note low fluid levels may mean your brakes need to be inspected.
• If your brake fluid needs topping up regularly, allow us to inspect your braking system as it may have developed a leak.

The National Car Test (NCT) was introduced in 2000, since when all cars four years and older must undergo an NCT. The NCT due date is calculated by reference to the date of first registration of the car, with tests due every two years for cars younger than 10 years and annually for cars older than 10 years. Cars can be inspected up to 90 days in advance of the anniversary of the registration date.

The NCT Pre-test

The NCT can be stressful time for the car owner. At Green Auto Service we provide a comprehensive pre-NCT inspection. The aim of the pre-test is to replicate as best possible the NCT itself and to provide the customer with a detailed report which transparently advises potential issues should there be any which may cause the vehicle to fail.

Batteries

If a battery has been run down at some stage, jump starting the car will re-generate the battery but will NOT get it back to being fully charged. The clutch in your car is one of the hardest working components allowing your engine to select gears smoothly. The basic components of a clutch include the clutch plate, bearings and pressure plate.

How do I know if my clutch needs replacement?

Shock Absorbers

The principle suspension components are fitted to each of the four corners of your vehicle and work together to cushion the vehicle by absorbing the impact from potholes and other minor imperfections in the road. This keeps your vehicle stable and your tyres firmly in contact with the road surface for the maximum amount of time.

In order for your vehicles braking system to work most effectively the tyres need to be in contact with the road on all types of surfaces and conditions. In fact at 20kph, worn shock absorbers can add up to 2 meters to your braking distance

Wheel Alignment

Wheel alignment also known as tracking is often confused with wheel balancing. The two really have nothing to do with each other except for the fact that they affect ride and handling. If a wheel is out of balance, it will cause a vibration at motorway speeds that can be felt through the steering wheel. However if the alignment is out, it can cause excessive and uneven tyre wear along with steering or tracking problems.

Wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other. The purpose of these adjustments is to maximise tyre life and have vehicle that tracks straight and true when driving along a straight level road.
